What criteria do we use to design our environmentally friendly products?

The design of products made from recycled and renewable materials is a complex process, and the most important factors are outlined in this article.

What criteria do we use to design our environmentally friendly products?

One of the key elements of eco-design is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which allows the environmental impacts of a product's entire life cycle to be measured. This takes into account:
- The sourcing, production and processing of the product's raw materials,
- The energy consumption and carbon emissions of the manufacturing processes,
- The environmental impact of the use and disposal of the product. Through eco-design, we aim to minimise the product's carbon footprint and optimise energy use.

When sourcing raw materials, it is essential to ensure traceability. This involves identifying the production sites down to the source of raw materials and ensuring that the supply chain is transparent for each order. This practice not only increases sustainability, but also boosts consumer confidence.

Recycled and biocycled materials are also playing an increasing role in the design of personal protective equipment. Their use can significantly reduce the ecological footprint, as less new raw materials are needed, waste can be reduced and even recycled, and the principles of the circular economy can be applied. Packaging also contributes greatly to the environmental impact of a product. The Coverguard LESS project aims to reduce the environmental footprint of packaging by:
- Using bags made from recycled plastic,
- Minimal printing to reduce resource use,
- Use of optimised packaging formats to minimise waste.

In the pursuit of sustainability, it is important to reduce the distance between the point of production and the point of sale of products. Manufacturing in the Euromed area allows products to reach consumers by a shorter route, reducing CO2 emissions from transport. It also supports the local economy, creating jobs in the region.
